EPrints helps create world’s first repository for the visual arts

A repository which will make it possible for colleges and individuals in the arts to store and present their work in a creative way will be unveiled tomorrow (Wednesday 3 June) at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London.

Kultur, a project funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), has used the world-leading EPrints software from the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton to develop a joint pilot repository for the University of the Arts London, the University for the Creative Arts and Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. The project will be officially completed tomorrow and an event to mark the occasion will be held at Whitechapel Art Gallery.

‘Up to now, the focus of most repositories has been science and engineering and published articles,’ said Dr Leslie Carr of ECS. ‘Kultur has provided us with an opportunity to use EPrints to develop the first comprehensive institutional repository for the arts.’

The Kultur project provides a flexible, multimedia pilot repository capable of showcasing a wide range of outputs from digital versions of paintings, photography, film, graphic and textile design to records of performances, shows and installations.

The three institutions involved will now develop their own open repositories to store and showcase their creative work.

‘This will make an immense difference to our institutions,’ said Andrew Gray, Kultur Project Officer, University of the Arts London. ‘It is the first repository of its kind in the arts world; there are others but there hasn’t been a visual one. The benefit of Kultur is that it will enable us to share our practice-based research across our colleges and with other institutions.’

‘It will also open up the art world, which will link up the often lone artist with the wider arts community,’ Dr Carr added.

The pilot repository will be showcased at Whitechapel Art Gallery between 6-8pm on Wednesday 3 June. The event will include presentations from Andy McGregor, JISC, Seymour Roworth-Stokes, Pro Vice Chancellor of Research at the University for the Creative Arts, Andrew Carnie, Researcher at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, and Pat Christie, Director of Library and Learning Resources, University of the Arts London.

Kultur was a collaboration between all three arts institutions in partnership with the Visual Arts Data Service and EPrints.

EPrints software, developed in 2000 by the University of Southampton’s School of Electronics and Computer Science, is used in hundreds of institutional repositories (IRs) around the world.

Einstein had a small brain

Computers & Technology & Science, Interesting News No Comments »

A study of Einstein’s brain has turned up a bit of a surprise - weighing in at 1230 grams, it fell at the low end of average for modern humans. The adult human brain weighs on average about 1500 grams.

However, the scientists found that Einstein’s parietal lobes–which are implicated in mathematical, visual, and spatial cognition–were 15% wider than normal parietal lobes. Possibly helping to explain his many contributions to Physics. Read more here.

Nicola Sturgeon says the pair are recovering in a hospital in Airdrie

A couple admitted to a Scottish hospital after returning from a holiday in Mexico have been confirmed as the UK’s first swine flu cases.

Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said the pair were recovering well in a Lanarkshire hospital.

Of 25 cases reported, 14 are still being investigated.

The World Health Organization has raised its alert level for a possible pandemic, saying there is now sustained human-to-human transmission. Read More

Scientists to build ‘brain box’

Manchester scientists’ work aims to make computers more reliable

A new type of computer that mimics the complex interactions in the human brain is being built by UK scientists.

The £1m machine, nicknamed the “brain box”, will be constructed at the University of Manchester.

The first of its kind in the world, it will be used to help researchers engineer fail-safe electronics.

Professor Steve Furber, of the university school of computer science, said computer science had much to learn from biological systems.

“Our brains keep working despite frequent failures of their component neurons, and this ‘fault-tolerant’ characteristic is of great interest to engineers who wish to make computers more reliable,” he explained.

Visual encoding

In the brain, groups of neurons work together, producing bursts of activity called “spikes”.

These spikes give rise to the characteristic brain wave patterns seen on an electroencephalogram (EEG) trace.

The “brain box” will use large numbers of microprocessors to model the way networks of neurons interact.

“Our aim is to use the computer to understand better how the brain works at the level of spike patterns, and to see if biology can help us see how to build computer systems that continue functioning despite component failures,” said Prof Furber.

Another function of the computer will be to help scientists understand how details of complex visual scenes are encoded by the brain.

‘Ill’ worker fired over Facebook

Facebook has been involved in a number of workplace controversies

A Swiss woman has lost her job after her employers spotted she was using the Facebook website when she had claimed to be too ill to use a computer.

The unnamed woman was suffering a migraine and had told her employer, Nationale Suisse, she needed to lie in a darkened room.

The company said its discovery that she was also using Facebook destroyed its trust in her and prompted her sacking.

But the woman told a Swiss newspaper she was innocent.

The woman, who is from Basle, said she had been accessing the internet on her iPhone while in bed.

She said she did not believe the company’s assertion that a colleague had inadvertently noticed her using Facebook, accusing it instead of spying on her.

She said the company had created a fictitious Facebook persona which become “friends” with her, allowing the company to monitor her online activity.

Her suspicions were raised when the “friend” suddenly disappeared after she was fired, the woman told 20 Minuten daily.

But the company says it followed a simple logic: that those who are well enough to use Facebook with a migraine are well enough to work with a migraine.

It is not the first time Facebook has been involved in a workplace controversy. Some companies have banned it altogether, while others have fired employees over statements they make about work while online.
