Hi there,

Finally, all assignments finished. At the end of the 4-5 weeks, I successfully handed in my essay and presentation. I look forward to being announced. I wanted to share my studies which is about “phishing”. In the last 2 years, internet users have seen the rapid growth of a scourge called “phishing”. If you want to use all or part of my study, it is suggested that “citation, referencing”  system should be used. Please do not copy my work without my acknowledgement. No to plagiarism. Thank you.

Einstein had a small brain

Computers & Technology & Science, Interesting News No Comments »

A study of Einstein’s brain has turned up a bit of a surprise - weighing in at 1230 grams, it fell at the low end of average for modern humans. The adult human brain weighs on average about 1500 grams.

However, the scientists found that Einstein’s parietal lobes–which are implicated in mathematical, visual, and spatial cognition–were 15% wider than normal parietal lobes. Possibly helping to explain his many contributions to Physics. Read more here.

Dangerous and tasty too

The element Chlorine is a pale green gas. It has a disagreeable, suffocating odor. It is also poisonous and it can kill you! In fact it was used as a weapon in World War I.

The element Sodium is a soft silvery white metal. It is a highly reactive element and it violently reacts with water. If you swallowed a bit of it - you may very well die!

When you mix them together something very interesting happens:

Sodium + Chlorine → Sodium Chloride

They form a compound called Sodium Chloride in an extremely violent reaction. The reason this is interesting is that you eat Sodium Chloride every day. You know it as salt!

Now check out the reaction:

Scientists to build ‘brain box’

Computers & Technology & Science, Interesting News No Comments »
University of Manchester

Manchester scientists’ work aims to make computers more reliable

A new type of computer that mimics the complex interactions in the human brain is being built by UK scientists.

The £1m machine, nicknamed the “brain box”, will be constructed at the University of Manchester.

The first of its kind in the world, it will be used to help researchers engineer fail-safe electronics.

Professor Steve Furber, of the university school of computer science, said computer science had much to learn from biological systems.

“Our brains keep working despite frequent failures of their component neurons, and this ‘fault-tolerant’ characteristic is of great interest to engineers who wish to make computers more reliable,” he explained.

Visual encoding

In the brain, groups of neurons work together, producing bursts of activity called “spikes”.

These spikes give rise to the characteristic brain wave patterns seen on an electroencephalogram (EEG) trace.

The “brain box” will use large numbers of microprocessors to model the way networks of neurons interact.

“Our aim is to use the computer to understand better how the brain works at the level of spike patterns, and to see if biology can help us see how to build computer systems that continue functioning despite component failures,” said Prof Furber.

Another function of the computer will be to help scientists understand how details of complex visual scenes are encoded by the brain.

Google a googol, go on

If I had a half dozen apples I’d have 6 apples.

If I had a dozen books I’d have 12 books.

If I had a bakers dozen rolls I’d have 13 rolls.

If I had a Googol (1 with a hundred zeros after it) of something I’d have … a lot of them.

The name “Google” originated from a common misspelling of the word “googol” by the way.

And a Googolplex (10 to the power of a googol) would be:

And if I had a mole of something I’d have 602214179000000000000000 (6.023 x 10 to the power of 23) of them. This last one is called the Avogadro constant and is the number of atoms in 12 grams of carbon. That is a lot of atoms in only 12 grams of something!

Stop going to class!(’iTunes university’ better than the real thing)

Computers & Technology & Science No Comments »

Students have been handed another excuse to skip class from an unusual quarter. New psychological research suggests that university students who download a podcast lecture achieve substantially higher exam results than those who attend the lecture in person.

Podcasted lectures offer students the chance to replay difficult parts of a lecture and therefore take better notes, says Dani McKinney, a psychologist at the State University of New York in Fredonia, who led the study.

“It isn’t so much that you have a podcast, it’s what you do with it,” she says.
